About Avenue B

Avenue B's objectives are:

  • to minimize death, disease and injury to those engaging in, or associated with those engaging in, high risk behaviours known to spread infectious diseases through evidence based education, support and harm reduction practices;
  • to provide educational opportunities and awareness-raising activities and to encourage and promote harm reduction practices to the general public, in order to reduce the rate of new infections in our community; and
  • to support and assist in the development of appropriate and evidence based harm reduction policies and practices in related organizations.

  • Education & Training (Naloxone);
  • Treatment information;
  • Awareness events;
  • Needle Distribution Program;
  • Volunteer opportunities;
  • Code Red Distribution (Feminine hygiene products).

About the role

The treasurer shall keep full and accurate accounts of all receipts and disbursements of the corporation in proper books of accounts and shall deposit all money or other valuables in the name and to the credit of the corporation in such banks as the board shall designate.

The treasurer shall disburse the funds of the corporation as directed by the board, and may delegate some or all of these tasks to employees of the corporation, but retains responsibility for assuring their accurate and timely completion.

Frequency of meetings

Board meetings are held virtually and monthly except in July, August, October (replaced by the AGM), and December. 

Please note: As the treasurer is required to sign cheques on a weekly basis, the ideal candidate should reside in the Greater Saint John area.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all accounting entries, payables, receivables, payroll, financial filing and other transactions are up to date in QuickBooks;
  • Review employee expense reports;
  • Prepare and present treasurer report to the board;
  • Participate and present in annual general meeting and board meetings;
  • Meet CRA record keeping requirements for invoices and deposits; ensure prompt payment of payables;
  • Complete and submit reports as required for federal and provincial grants; complete and submit semiannual Public Service Bodies' GST/HST rebate return;
  • Complete and submit Registered Charity Information Return to Canada Revenue Agency;
  • Regular and timely preparation of T4s, T4As, and ROEs;
  • Other duties as requested.

Qualifications

  • Post secondary education with experience in finance management and accounting;
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation would be considered an asset;
  • Strong administrative and computer skills with proficiency in MS Office and QuickBooks;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with different stakeholders;
  • Professional manner and judgment with sensitive and confidential information;
  • Clear police check including vulnerable sector screening will be requested.
