Overview

Horizon Health Network (Horizon) is the largest regional health authority and one of the largest employers in New Brunswick, and the second-largest health authority in Atlantic Canada. Horizon’s health care providers are experts in diverse areas of health and community services and provide services to half a million people in the official language of their choice.

The Board of Directors helps assure that New Brunswickers receive care in an efficient, well-managed public health care system. The Board is responsible for the governance and management of health services in the parts of the province that it serves. Directors work with regional health authority leadership to establish the organization’s overall vision and ensure there is appropriate community engagement and consultation. The Board also regularly reviews the organization's long-term plans, looks at significant issues affecting the organization and evaluates results.

Current position to be filled

The Government of New Brunswick is seeking to recruit a director for the Board of Directors of Regional Health Authority B, Horizon Health Network. The Board includes seven voting members appointed by the Minister of Health. The appointment is expected to take effect in July 2024.

Qualifications

Candidates must be residents of New Brunswick and resident in the health region for which Horizon is established, for at least six months immediately before the appointment.

Based on the Board’s current composition, the following skills are of particular interest at this time:

  • Significant finance or accounting experience from work in large organizations;
  • An ability to provide leadership to the Board, the Chief Executive Officer and the Chief Financial Officer, in understanding and interpreting financial results, and how to measure Horizon’s financial performance;
  • Experience in setting financial goals, aligned with both strategic and operational plans;
  • A Chartered Professional Accountant or an Institute of Corporate Directors designation with significant experience working with boards would be beneficial;
  • Fluency in both official languages would be an asset.

Also considered will be strong communication and interpersonal skills; strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills; results orientation; ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups, build relationships, and manage conflict; and a reputation for honesty, integrity and fairness.

The composition of the Board’s gender and linguistic representation, as well as the cultural and geographic diversity of the province, is a consideration for appointment.

Conditions/Compensation

Board Members receive remuneration of $500 per full meeting day and $250 per half meeting day. Additionally, all members are remunerated for travel expenses in accordance with the Government of New Brunswick Travel Directive AD-2801.

Board members must be available (typically 4-5 times per year) to participate in Board meetings.

To submit

Applicants may submit a resume and cover letter by e-mail, regular mail or fax, with details of education; volunteer, board/committee, and work experience; and contact information (telephone number, civic address and e-mail address), and in addition complete the online application form.

While we appreciate the interest of those who submit an expression of interest, only those candidates selected for consideration will be contacted.
